INDUSTRIALIZATION. I thought industrialization of economic life was inevitable and desirable, and that the university should be willing and even eager to train skilled personnel to advance it, and to engage in scientiﬁc research that supported it. However, I saw the sad impacts on undergraduate liberal education and on the humanities and tried to oªset them. I favored the movement toward universal access for all young people to higher education but wanted to assure that it would not overwhelm the highest level of training for the most able among them.

On June 25, 1950, North Korea attacked South Korea with Chinese support. S. troops supporting the South Koreans were pushed back into the Pusan Corridor by September 1950 in bloody ﬁghting. R. until 1953 when Stalin died, and the Cominform (1947–56) insisted on total loyalty to the Communist “line” from party members around the world. The Cold War was at its most intense.
