INDUSTRIALIZATION. I thought industrialization of economic life was inevitable and desirable, and that the university should be willing and even eager to train skilled personnel to advance it, and to engage in scientific research that supported it. However, I saw the sad impacts on undergraduate liberal education and on the humanities and tried to oªset them. I favored the movement toward universal access for all young people to higher education but wanted to assure that it would not overwhelm the highest level of training for the most able among them.
